With all of the artificial sweeteners that are out there, it can be hard for an ex-sugar addict to find something that’s actually good for them. Plenty of companies will tell you that their natural sweeteners are better for you than conventional sugar or artificial sweeteners, and they’re usually right.
The problem is that some ‘natural’ sweeteners aren’t actually natural at all. They’re advertised as if they’re in their pure, original form, when in reality, they’ve been fundamentally changed.
Such appears to be the case with stevia, a natural sweetener that’s advertised by beverage companies everywhere. You’ve probably seen beverages or other products that contain stevia, and it’s advertised as a natural substitute for sugar, aspartame and all of that other unhealthy stuff.
Stevia does have proven health benefits, especially for diabetics, but the problem is that big beverage corporations are extracting its sweetest ingredients, throwing the rest out and essentially turning it into the same artificial junk as aspartame or other fake sweeteners.
Robert Harrington at Natural Society tells us about the health benefits of natural stevia.
“Originally used by South American tribes for hundreds of years, [stevia] has been used to sweeten teas and medicines alike.
“Because of its extraordinary sweetness, it is also used in a variety of other prepared foods especially baked goods. The leaves of the Stevia rebaudiana plant have been recognized as a multi-purposeful herb in both Brazil and Paraguay where it is used as a ‘sweet treat.’ (1)
Sounds good, right? It would be if it weren’t for beverage companies’ dishonesty about how they use the sweetener. Robert tells us more.
“In their eagerness to jump on the stevia bandwagon, the big beverage companies like Coca Cola and Pepsi have done what they usually do. They have formulated processes for extracting the sweetest ingredients from the stevia plant leaf. This process of chemical extraction renders the original form of the stevia herb virtually unrecognizable.” (2)
We need to look out for any kind of modified stevia, because it’s basically a different substance from its natural, healthy counterpart.
“The various beverage and food companies now market their new and improved stevia-sweetened products under various brand names.
“In each of these cases it is important to understand that the extracts and derivatives are far from natural. Because they are extracted or derived chemically, there may be present other chemical byproducts and/or residues which may be harmful.
Tests have not yet been conducted to determine exactly what the detrimental effects might be with the long-term use of these highly processed isolates.” (3)
Big beverage companies have once again proven that they can’t leave natural ingredients alone. They have to mess with them somehow, and they aren’t happy until they’ve made the ingredients unhealthy in some way.
In an effort to extract all the sweetness out of stevia, these companies have turned what a genuine health booster into yet another modified sweetener to avoid.
We have to be more diligent than ever about the things we put into our bodies, and I’m not saying we shouldn’t trust stevia. I’m saying we should be very discerning about the food or drinks we purchase that contain it, and just because it’s there doesn’t mean the product it’s in is healthy.
These companies have made a habit out of misleading consumers, and it’s time to take a stand and reclaim our right to natural, healthy foods and drinks.
Plenty of health-conscious people will tell you that the best way to do this is to stop buying from these companies, which is easier said than done, but anything we do to protest them will make a difference.
Let’s make it known that we don’t want anything processed, artificial or just plain misleading in our food or drinks. We want natural food instead of food that’s been processed and modified into oblivion, and we won’t stand for anything less.
The people have the true power, and now, we have to use it. How we’ll do that is up to us as individuals, but it’s clear that we need to do something.
