From Earth We Are One
Child marriage ban, finally in Zambia, to hit the overwhelming use of women or girls as tools of income right in the kisser.
“People [in rural areas] perceive a girl child as a source of wealth, and would rather give the girl into marriage to raise funds for educating the boy child.”
Nearly one-third of girls under 18 used to get married, 4 percent of that are married under 15. Let’s give some life to these numbers. If there are 7,323,771 females in Zambia around the year 2014. 1/3 around of them get married at 18 which is 2,441,257. That is so many children getting married before they even have a shot of what life could be. Now out of 2,441,257, 4% are married under 15 years of age. 97,650.28 females have been married in 2014 under the age of 15 in Zambia.
97,650.28 females have been married in 2014 under the age of 15.
And remember, these account and statistics vary due to changes in circumstance and birth rates. It could look very different today than it did 2 years ago, though 97,650.28 is a lot of premature young ones getting married. Their median age for giving birth is 25.
Zambia’s average births per woman are FIVE children. That is far more than the 1-3 we usually have in the United States.
It seems like they popping and are producing more people, but is the child marriage good on the child’s health?
These two after getting married as children, Loveness Mudzuru and Ruvimbo Tsopodzi, took the government to court. Mudzuru said, “I really am happy that we have played an instrumental part in making Zimbabwe a safe place for girls.”
“I really am happy that we have played an instrumental part in making Zimbabwe a safe place for girls.”
Mudzuru herself was married at 16 and had two kids before she was 18.
They successfully have gotten rid of Child Marriage under law. Pretty cool all the things we are all doing for humanity, collectively around the world.
