Alan Rickman is a famous actor very known for his roles in Harry Potter, Die Hard, Robin Hood, Dogma, and many other films. He has unfortunately passed away recently at the age of 69 from cancer. Not a lot of people know what he did outside of being a famous actor.
Alan Rickman really acknowledged that those who are very known (celebrities) are usually being looked up as figures that should create positive change in the world.
Rickman once said:
“Actors are agents of change, a film, a piece of theater, a piece of music, or a book can make a difference. It can change the world.”
“Talent is an accident of genes, and a responsibility.”
Since Rickman became financially stable, he began to reach out to charities in order to give aid. Apparently, he was very active with the charity Saving Faces which basically helps those who suffer from cancer as well as facial disfigurements. Aside from that, he also contributed to the International Performers Aid Trust which in turn empowers those who suffer in poor countries.
In fact, with efforts to help, he was also involved in more controversial and important issues such as leading a play about a peace activist that was killed by an Israeli bulldozer meanwhile protesting in Palestine. With more specifics, the play was named “My Name is Rachel Corrie”.
As one would expect, because he wanted to make a bold political stance, he has very criticized. Regardless of the criticism, he responded to them saying that the play wasn’t about Palestine or Israel, it was solely about being a citizen of the world.
In regards to this, apparently Rickman’s death actually came days after the passing of David Bowie. David Bowie is also known as a cultural icon and activist also known who died as well at the age of 69 from cancer. Bowie was once given an opportunity to be knighted by the Queen of England and turned down the offer, despite the fact that many other rock stars went along with it.

I didn’t know that Bowie turned down a possible “knighthood.” I’m impressed.
