Sam Simon, the writer and producer who played a huge role in creating the absolutely legendary show “The Simpsons” passed away at the age of 59 this week. Simon was diagnosed with colorectal cancer in February of 2013. He passed peaceful at his home.

Not only did he leave behind thousands of laughs through his program, he also left $100 million specifically for charity. Simon often donated to a variety of causes, but animal rights was closest to his heart.

“A lot of it is selfish, I get to watch these animals that have been in concrete bunkers their whole life, I get to watch them take their first steps on grass, I get to fly my friends out. They’re dependent on us for that and so I feel that it’s my responsibility to speak for those who can’t speak for themselves,” he said.

Simon’s family says that his final days and weeks were filled with love and joy, and that he passed surrounded by family, friends, and people that he loved.

Somehow, I ended up surrounded by people that love me and take care of me and will do anything for me. It’s a good feeling. That’s called happiness.”
