A hitchhiker was in for a big surprise when he was offered a ride by a world leader.
Gerhald Acosta was looking for a ride home from his job at a paper mill in southwestern Uruguay. He said on Facebook that several cars passed him, but an SUV with government plates pulled over.
After Acosta got into the car, he realized he had been picked up by President Jose Mujica and Senator Lucia Topolansky, his wife.
“I know this woman. It was Lucia, with Manuela the dog, and Pepe (Jose) in the front seat,” Acosta told El Observador, according to Fox News Latino. “I couldn’t believe it. The president was giving me a ride.”
The president and his wife were on their way home when they picked up Acosta. He said the president was concerned and pressing him about why Acosta needed a ride in the first place. Acosta says the ride was short but that he was moved with the kindness of the couple’s gesture.
“When I got out, I thanked them profusely because not everyone helps someone out on the road, and much less a president,” he told El Observador.
Mujica has been nicknamed the world’s “poorest” president thanks to his decision to donate almost all of his money, 90%, to charity. “I do fine with that amount,” he told Univision in an interview. “I have to do fine because there are many Uruguayans who live with much less.”

If I was a President I would do exactly the same as Pepe, likewise I do not believe in having a lot of money and don’t really know how to spend it, as there are are so many poor people in the world in need of basic things, I would like wholeheartedly to thank everyone in the world who helps people less fortunate, keep it up and your reward will be immense.
