Music With Meaning – Jimi Hendrix: Castles Made of Sand

Wes: Beyond being one of the most extraordinary, intelligent and revolutionary guitarists the world has ever seen (if not the most extraordinary), Jimi Hendrix, along with many of the hippies of his day, was attuned to greater truths and perceptions.

I’ve always enjoyed this song from Jimi, because it not only features things he pioneered on the guitar (such as the ‘reverse guitar’ you hear in the beginning, end and all throughout the song), it also features lyrics that encourage us not to put our faith in finite things – thus the lyric, ‘and so castles made of sand, fall in the sea, eventually’.

The most interesting thing about this song is the third verse, however, where he describes a girl who’s ‘crippled for life and can’t speak a sound’ before she witnesses none other than a galactic ship in the sky, which heals her of all her debilitating illnesses.

“But then a sight she never seen made her jump and say, look a golden winged ship is passing my way!”

Enjoy!
