When we find ourselves at the end of the road… or the end of our rope, this is where we often give up. When we find ourselves in a position where all our plans have failed and we have lost the strength to go on, we finally let go. When we are done trying to do it on our own, we realize we need help. Once we accept the fact that we need help… then we are ready to ask for it.

Asking for help is an act of bravery and submission to someone or something other than oneself. Why do we resist doing this until exhausted and depleted? Asking for directions, or insight is not weakness! It is better to ask for help in forging a new path than to waste away in a dead-end life.

Sometimes we may ask our friends and family for help… the very people God has placed on our path, and for good reason! Many have earned our trust, love us and want the best for us. Their loving guidance can often lead us where we need to go, and let us know what we need to do. And when people fail us (as they often do)… we still have hope!

Hope brings with it the awareness that we are not assuredly and completely lost and alone! It’s the confident expectation that we will get help, even if that help comes directly from God who is often beyond our imagination… and beyond our vision.

God is a power greater than ourselves that is always with us, therefore present at every dead-end in our lives. We just need to stop for a moment and speak to Him from the heart. When we pray for His help we can be sure He will hear us and answer us.

C.S. Lewis wrote:
“I pray because I can’t help myself. I pray because I’m helpless. I pray because the need flows out if me all the time, waking and sleeping. It doesn’t change God. It changes me.”

Maybe the prayer for help changes us by surrendering our own will, letting go of our self-obsessed need for control, or by simply helping us admit we cannot do it alone! Dead-end situations open us up to the possibility of divine direction. Dead-ends focus our ears to listen to God’s voice telling us there is a way out!

Surrendering, we hand our dead-end situation over to God Himself as He turns to us and says “Let me lead you out of this mess and onto the something better that I have in store for you.” With God, we can always do better, much better.

Perhaps I’m a Spiritual optimist, but I believe dead-ends can be one of the greatest of situations for us to find ourselves in. Dead-ends are often the beginning of a better way… and a better life. This is where we can walk on the path God mapped out for us! Dead-ends are where we can give up on our earthly plans and embrace our spiritual destiny!
