Note from Wes: I’m posting this because we have one of these disguised towers around this area. They are interesting to say the least…

Taken near New York City, this cell tower is disguised to look like a large pine tree. (flickr/JeffreyPutman)

There’s a chance you could be driving past a cell phone tower every day and not know it, because some of these behemoth structures of technology are disguised to resemble surrounding trees.

It’s a fascinating attempt to hide the human effect on nature that started 21 years ago in Denver, according to Wired. While it seems inventive to conceal a large cell tower in a natural environment like the Mile High City, it’s also pricey — the report also states that the “fake tree” look for a cell tower could cost as much as $150,000.

  1. We have one of these. Its located just outside a National Park called Great Falls, on the Maryland side. I think its on private property, which I think is Potomac MD, but right on the line of the Park, Great Falls, Maryland. There are many government people who live in Montgomery County, MD, close areas such as Potomac, Rockville, Great Falls – in MD and just across the Potomac river is VA (McLean, Great Falls, VA) Glen Echo, the Washington DC line is right there too, Fox Hall, MacArthur Blv. They need to have good cell service and also for future government monitoring there…. :p This one is located in so many huge trees its hard to see. Its been there for several years.

  2. I served on our county planning commission for a number of years… back then, these types of towers were requested (actually demanded) by environmental groups–people wanted cell services in most rural of areas but they did not want to look at poles driving up the roads.

As we develop our telepathic abilities… we can eliminate these~ Cheers
